Stephen is a self-taught photographer born and raised in Calgary to Chinese immigrants. He graduated from the University of Calgary with a degree in Geomatics Engineering - the collection, integration and analysis of geospatial data. He translates this discipline into his art by capturing the spatial relationships of geometry, design and the remnants of human activity on 35mm and medium format film.
His photographic practice explores the design, architecture, history, and detritus of human built environments. Through a typological series he can contrast a structure's functional purpose with their stylistic flourishes and compare how human spaces have evolved over time. By capturing empty voids and liminal spaces in particular, he invites the viewer to immerse themselves within each photo to seek out the details and question if they think that space makes them feel invited or alienated.

Thank you for taking an interest in my work.
